City Chic: How To Have City Style No Matter Where You Live
Posted by Racquelle Nash
Style varies from city to city. Even within the United States from the west coast to the east coast, style changes. So you could almost imagine how it must differ between New York

and Tokyo.

But just because you saw this year’s “it” handbag on British model Lily Donaldson doesn’t mean that you can’t have it… or find one that looks just like it for a lot less that is. City style is about being thrifty, edgy, smart, and most importantly stylish no matter where you are in the world.

I’ll occasionally fall under Jessica Biel’s less is more spell but I prefer down right up tight supermodel city style. And no one does city style better than a supermodel. Whether they mean to or not, models just always seem to get it right. Heidi Klum has finished off many looks with leather biker boots, Russian beauty Natasha Poly often runs around between fashion shows in layered shirts, and Daria Werbowy cleans up in funky jackets.

But the first and most important must have to get city style right is a classic bag. Without that, the entire outfit is thrown off. Jessica Stam is known for having classic bags from the Marc Jacobs Stam bag to the classic Chanel flap bag. So I went online in search of another classic city sack … the Hermes Birkin Bag. Normally there’s a wait list for the $15,000 handmade leather bag, but on Shopsuey.com you can carry around the same exact bag for about $14, 950 less. Kate Moss was seen in New York a while back toting around a green tote that she paid a lot for, but on Shopsuey.com the same bag is only $42.99 and comes in black, brown, and green.
And from that comes another important must have… a simple black blazer.

I was lucky to find mine at Trailblazer in the casino on sale. But before that, I was in a blazer coma and couldn’t find anything. And of course now that I have a blazer, all I see are blazers. H&M is the place to go for a black topper. Just last Sunday I walked through H&M and found a sexy belted blazer for $34.90. There was another one that had ¾ length sleeves and was shorter at the waist. A blazer is crucial to any wardrobe because it’s easy to pair with everything from jeans to an evening dress.

City style doesn’t stop there. Sunglasses are becoming the quick fix for every outfit these days. I used to hate wearing sunglasses, my Aunt Sesca used to wear a pair of big white shades and they used to make me laugh. But now I realize she was just protecting her eyes. So now I protect mine in a pair of 1960′s sunnies that I picked up at a vintage boutique last year for $10. Celebs like Drew Barrymore and Kristen Stewart are opting for $140 Ray Bans, but Forever 21 has look-a-likes online for $5.80. Also, the butterfly style is a huge hit with Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez, and Shopsuey.com has a pair in 3 different colors for $14.
Jewelry should be kept to a minimum with studs or hoops, Gisele Bundchen rocks hoops all over Manhattan. A piece to invest in that will last you a lifetime of happiness is a timeless watch. A sporty bold face one from Calvin Klein for $145 or a more feminine one by DKNY for $115 will keep you on time. We need to stop relying on our cell phones for the time, it’s not lady like… a classy watch will always keep you in style. To top it all, one must smell appealing. Gap’s new signature scent Close is a light floral fragrance that has hints of musk and citrus. For something that makes you smile, jump into Elizabeth Arden’s new irresistibly feminine fragrance simply called Pretty. The name says it all.
It doesn’t matter where you live or what your budget is, city style can be achieved anywhere in the world. With a few classic staples, your style will fall right into place. Anyone can achieve city style on a low budget you just have to know where to slide your credit card.
