Whenever an entertainer has a sold out show you know it just has to be great and great doesn’t even begin to describe Mariah Carey’s performance at Foxwoods’ MGM Grand on January 15th. Despite having a terrible migraine before the show, I was able to put my pain aside when I saw Mariah being magically lowered from the ceiling on a swing wearing a sparkling gold bodice tucked into a big tulle skirt that eventually was ripped off of her turning into a teeny tiny mini dress. There are only two words to describe Carey’s performance… incredibly empowering.

As a woman it’s crucial that I have respectable role models to look up to and after Carey’s show, I felt happier that I am a woman. Carey had me hooked from the very beginning whether I was bobbing my head or full on trying to copy her high pitch screams. Before Mariah even came down on her swing the curtains had her name written across them in big white letters that made me smile. After belting out her first song of the evening, “Touch my body,” she gave a few puns on her tipsy moment that happened the other night while accepting an award for her work in, “Precious,” and then made her first of four costume changes of the evening.

Her second getup was a heavenly gold v-neck empire waist gown which she wore during her song, “Angels Cry” as a pair of trapeze artists did cirque du soleil movements in the air above her. While she was performing a song she wrote for her husband, she even called him on to the stage to give him a smooch. The down to earth diva even noted on how she is a diva when she called two hair stylists from back stage to get her hair out of her face. She then lay down on a backless couch and showed the 4,000 screaming fans her sequined Louis Vuitton sling backs she wore with every outfit of the show.

During her next costume change we were kept on our toes by back up dancers but there was nothing like seeing Mariah rise up from the floor back onto the stage where she emerged wearing a sequined mini dress with a fur shrug. Her fourth and final costume change was the best of the entire show. Her confidence clearly shined through in the black v-neck halter mermaid styled gown she came out in while singing one of her older songs, “Emotions.” That was by far the only song the whole crowd got up and danced to as a whole.

Carey did a really good job mixing her older songs with her newer ones too which was smart of her because there were surprisingly more older fans there than there were younger ones. It was nice that she didn’t just play her newer hip hop tunes from her latest album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel and she gave the crowd a great mix of both worlds from, “Obsessed,” to, “Hero,” and “Emotions.”

My favorite part about the concert was that she gave her fans the predictable hand flicks with every high pitched note/scream she is famous for. She also did her usual of moving her voice up and down and waving her arm in the air as if she were trying to get a taxi but that was expected and highly appreciated as a long time fan of hers. You could tell that Mariah was being herself the entire time too. Even with the elaborate costume changes, she wasn’t trying too hard and she even laughed with the crowd when she forgot the words to her song, “We belong together” while she made her band restart it.

Don’t let that one mishap sway you to believe the concert was anything but uplifting and encouraging. Just from being in the auditorium and seeing Mariah Carey be her true self with my own eyes made me excited that I was a part of that show, even if I was two floors up looking down. That was one concert I will never forget.
