Who Are The Top TV Earners?

Salaries for TV actors with lead roles aint chump change…but according to TV Guide Magazine, it ain’t like the good ole days.

TV execs are getting more and more stingy on salaries for new stars.

Previously, salaries for leads would be between $150,000 to $200,000 per episode.

Now most deals for new stars range between $75,000 and $125,000.

According to one studio exec, “No one broke the bank on anything this year.”

Take for instance one particular veteran film actor who had been courted for years to do network television.

In negotiations for a lead role in one of the new network dramas coming out fall season, he asked for $250,000 dollars. The studio said no. The actor drew the line at $200,000 dollars. Rather the coming back with a counter offering, the network just moved on to somebody else.

Thats Television today.

Why so stingy?

Advertising, the life blood of the Television business, has dried up due to the recession and the intrusion of DVR playback and online television.

Not only are networks cutting talent cost down for new shows but for veteran shows as well.

ABC’s Brothers & Sisters, is cutting down episodes from 22 to 18 and cutting star Rob Lowe.

Faced with a decline in ratings, CSI’s Marg Helgenberger will be working a lighter load.

But just because belts are tightening doesn’t mean success is not rewarded.

Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki and Kaley Cuoco, the stars of The Big Bang Theory, are expecting raises as their show has risen in the Nielsen rankings.

The cast members are now making less than $100,000 per episode. According to studio exec, “I think they’ll give an extra year to their studio, Warner Bros., in exchange for each of them getting $150,000 to $200,000 an episode. They’ll get bumps from there and could get up to $300,000 an episode. If it’s a hit show, you start paying.”

According to Forbes, as of March 2010, the world has 937 billionaires.

That may seem like alot, but its not even a drop in the bucket when you consider a world population of almost 7 billion people.

Would you think that despite coming from different backgrounds and nationalities, these 937 billionaires have something in common?

According to Investopedia, they do.

There are 5 Billionaire Traits that if you happened to pick up, may not automatically turn you into a billionaire but will increase your bottom line.

Entrepreneurialism

7 out of 10 of the top billionaires off Forbes’ 2010 list got there by starting their own businesses.

Bill Gates ($53 billion), was still in his junior year in college (Harvard) when he started Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT).

No doubt being at the right place at the right time didn’t hurt.

But Gates made the decision to go into business for himself, right away, rather than work for somebody else first.

What? Was Taylor Momsen not available? We all know how much she enjoys prancing around in not a lot of clothing.

The Belgian model revealed that the photo shoot for the collection is taking place at the end of August with photographer Frank De Mulder will be behind the camera.

Young turk Billionaires like Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Google’s Sergey Brin may capture the public’s imagination with their “overnight success stories“…

But that doesn’t mean you can’t learn a thing or two from the “slow rollers” or “late bloomers“….those who became billionaires after a life time of ups, downs and hard knocks.

Take for example David Duffield, founder of PeopleSoft.

David Duffield didn’t start PeopleSoft until he was 47. His 4th business venture, he took out a second mortgage on his house to fund it.

“You kind of know when you’re on to something.” - David Duffield

PeopleSoft would become the world’s 2nd largest application software company before being bought by Oracle in 2005 making Duffield into a billionaire ($1.2 billion according to Forbes).

It took David Duffield a few years to nail down the right management formula, which he believes is a combination of customer service and team spirit.

“[Success] came with time. I made a lot of mistakes along the way.” - David Duffield

John Sperling didn’t come up with his billion dollar idea until he was in his 50s.

Sperling was a San Jose State college professor when he was charged with running a government program that assigned police and school teachers as role models for juvenile delinquents.

Impressed with how eager working people were to educate themselves outside of their jobs, Sperling started a mail order school in 1976, that we know today as the University of Phoenix.

“Money I’ve made notwithstanding, I am an unintentional entrepreneur and an accidental CEO.” says Sperling in his autobiography Rebel With A Cause.

Sperling attributes “risk-taking” as one of his ingredients of success, writing: “We violated much that was sacred in the groves of academia.”

Before he became a billionaire, Dietrich Mateschitz was a “professional student“, taking 10 years to get his degree.

“Life as a student is enjoyable,” Mateschitz told Forbes in 2005.

While traveling in Asia, working for, German cosmetics company Blendax, Mateschitz was impressed with the popularity of syrupy drinks sold as “pick me ups”.

At age 48, Mateschitz formed a partnership with one of these syrup makers to sell a version of tonic to western drinkers.

He called it Red Bull.

Now Mateschitz owns his own tropical island off the coast of Fiji, a Formula 1 racing team and two football clubs, Red Bull Salzburg and the New York Red Bulls.

Just goes to show, once again, “It’s not where you start but where you finish!”
